The Alamo (San Antonio de Valero Mission) is a former mission and fortress compound, now a museum, in San Antonio, Texas. It was built in the 18th century by the Spanish Empire with the intent of educating locals after their conversion to Christianity. Abandoned as a mission, it was used as a fortress by the Republic of Texas in several battles, most notably the Battle of the Alamo in 1836.

Today, the 4.2 acre site of The Alamo is a free museum maintained by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. It is just a short walk from the San Antonio River Walk and has three buildings, the Shrine, Long Barrack Museum and Gift Shop as well as a separate Alamo Gardens, all of which are maintained as tributes to Texas history and are a part of the larger Alamo Plaza area.
